"Once upon another time

This was just a notebook

On a dusty shelf,

Free of any troubles.

Not that long ago

I was just as unburdened -

I was serene, not damaged, although

The great and terrible grew near.

Like a reporter’s little pad,

I’m slight, and dark, and filled

With what can never be repeated

Inside the cage of propriety.

But I am not a blank slate

Or anybody’s clockwork doll

Made to be at the beck and call

Of daily routine of submission."
